Never one to pass up a potential viral marketing opportunity, Ryan Reynolds stepped in to help his wife, Blake Lively, promote her upcoming romantic drama, It Ends With Us, out this Friday, Aug. 9.
The “Junket Crasher” clip found Reynolds unexpectedly popping up in the interviewer’s chair opposite Lively’s co-star in the film, Brandon Sklenar. While the bit began with Reynolds ostensibly preparing to take Sklenar to task over his chemistry with Lively, it quickly turned into Reynolds revealing his own obsession with Sklenar.
As if that wasn’t weird and goofy enough, Reynolds’ mom soon showed up and tried to help her son carry out a big scheme to make Sklenar his new dad. Reading one of his prepared questions, Reynolds cracked, “Ryan would love to have a new dad to have a catch. And I think he could really use a man in his life — Hugh [Jackman] is no spring chicken anymore. Blink once for ‘Yes,’ or blink once for, ‘I’d love to be your new dad.’”
As soon as Reynolds finished reading his question, he saw his answer, pointing at Sklenar and quipping, “He blinked!”
Capping off the madness, the clip ended with none other than Hugh Jackman showing up to grill Sklenar. “It’s not every day a guy gets to interview the love interest of his best friend’s wife, the guy trying to replace Ryan as a husband, and me as his best mate,” Jackman growled. “I’ve never done an interview before, but I’ve done a lot of things, like crazy things in Australia. You do understand, you can’t even get into pre-school unless you take a person’s life with your own bear hands — twice.”
Despite the menacing tone, Jackman ultimately found himself as delighted by Sklenar as Tammy and Ryan. The clip ended with the trio — all wearing the same cardigan Sklenar was in the interview — raving about the charming young man.
