Green Day Mark 20 Years of 'American Idiot' With Massive Reissue

Green Day will celebrate the 20th anniversary of their American Idiot this October with a massive reissue that pairs the original 2004 “punk rock opera” with its B-sides, bonus tracks, unreleased demos, and live recordings from the era.

American Idiot 20thAnniversary, out October 25 as either an 8LP/2Blu-Ray or 4CD/2Blu-ray deluxe edition, also boasts the film “Heart Like A Hand Grenade,” 35 minutes of of the band live at the BBC, and a new documentary titled “20 Years of American Idiot.”

The unreleased material includes 15 demos from the recording sessions, including early takes on album hits like the title track, “Holiday,” “Boulevard of Broken Dreams,” and “Wake Me Up When September Ends,” plus a recording of Green Day’s Irving Plaza in New York concert on Sept. 21, 2004, the same day the album was released.

Ahead of the reissue’s arrival, Green Day have previewed the deluxe edition with three tracks: an unreleased demo of “Holiday/Boulevard of Broken Dreams (Demo),” the B-side “Favorite Son,” and “Minority (Live from Irving Plaza).”

A concept album about a disaffected teen dubbed the “Jesus of Suburbia,” American Idiot found Billie Joe Armstrong and company tapping into their political inklings for the first time after years of adolescent anthems, with album tracks criticizing the Iraq War and the George W. Bush administration.

Despite the more-serious material, the album was a Number One, multi-platinum smash, with “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” also winning Record of the Year at the Grammys. American Idiot also inspired a stage musical of the same name.

The deluxe edition of American Idiot 20thAnniversary, available to preorder now, also comes with an extensive book — including liner notes by American Idiot producer Rob Cavallo andRolling Stone’s David Fricke — chronicling the LP, a large Green Day flag, and the iconic American Idiot red tie.

Green Day have been celebrating American Idiot (and 1994’s Dookie) on the road this year as part of their tour in support of new album Saviors, playing the 2004 double-album in its entirety.
