The U.S. men’s basketball team survived a scare from hosts France to take home the gold medal at the Paris Olympics last week, but they’re not the only hoops celebration happening this month.

Footwear brand P.F. Flyers is celebrating the 96th birthday of legendary NBA star Bob Cousy with a special re-release of the Cousy All American High-Top.

Inspired by the original court sneakers worn by Cousy during his time in the league, the hi-top has been re-released in its original “Sea Salt” colorway, with flat white laces and contrast color green detailing. The vintage-inspired silhouette nods to the past with a retro P.F. Flyers logo patch, chunky sole, and rubber top cap. Modern updates include a new lightweight canvas upper and a more comfortable footbed, designed with P.F. Flyer’s so-called “magic foam” insole. The look is preppy yet relaxed.

The Cousy All-American was first released in 1958 and is said to be one of the first sneaker endorsement deals in professional sports. It has since become one of P.F. Flyers’ most iconic releases, as a staple with athletes, fashion fans and collectors alike.

In addition to the original “Sea Salt” pair above, the Cousy has also been re-issued in a classic “black/crimson” colorway and an “antique white/crimson” option. The latter two pairs retail for $90 at PFFlyers.com.

Cousy was a 13-time NBA All Star, who won six championship titles — all with the Boston Celtics. Dubbed “TheHoudiniof the Hardwood,” Cousy was known for both his scoring and ball-passing skills, and is widely-regarded as one of the best NBA point guards of all time. According to P.F. Flyers, both his on-court moves and off-court looks employed a “flashy style that was decades ahead of its time.”

Cousy was inducted into theBasketball Hall of Famein 1971 and had his uniform number retired by the Celtics in 1963. The NBAEastern Conferencechampionship trophy is also named in honor of the athlete.

Cousy celebrated his 96th birthday on August 9, making him the oldest-living NBA champion. A photo of the basketball star provided by P.F. Flyers showed him still wearing his signature shoes at home in Worcester, Massachusetts.

Speaking of shoes, the P.F. Flyers All-American Cousy is available now in men’s sizes 6 to 16. As with all limited-edition releases, the sneakers are expected to sell quickly, so we recommend snagging a pair while your size is still in stock. See full details at PFFlyers.com.
