SZA shared a cover of Eminem‘s 2002 hit “Lose Yourself” on Instagram, noting, “U ever just cover Eminem on some tender shit for feels?” She added that the low-key, intimate rendition wasn’t for a project but instead “just for mental health.”
The cover sees SZA crooning the lyrics over a piano backdrop, transforming Eminem’s hard-hitting rap lines into soulful vocals. Her post quickly earned the attention of the rapper himself, who commented with a wide-eyed emoji.
Eminem released “Lose Yourself” in 2002 as part of the soundtrack to his movie 8 Mile. It was written by Eminem and produced by Jeff Bass and Luis Resto. It became the rapper’s first No. 1 single on the Billboard Hot 100 and later won the Academy Award for Best Original Song. Eminem also scored Grammy Awards for Best Rap Song and Best Rap Solo Performance. In 2004, the song appeared on Rolling Stone‘s 500 Greatest Songs of All Time as one of only three rap numbers.
The cover arrived at the same time as Eminem’s new single, “Houdini.” The song is the first listen off his forthcoming LP, The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grace), which is due out this summer.
