While the Oscars usually dole out the little gold men to endeavors involving drama, pain, and glory, the ceremony has rarely taken time out of its evening to celebrate the plethora of fantastic comedies being made.
On her Good Hang podcast, Amy Poehler lamented over this on her latest episode while speaking to The Roses‘ Benedict Cumberbatch, who called in before his co-star Olivia Colman joined. As Poehler discussed the skill needed to pull off “physical comedy and really sharp and sarcastic wit,” Cumberbatch remarked: “If you can do comedy … you can do anything. I really do believe that.”
“Of course. You don’t have to tell me, babe!”exclaimed Poehler, who produced and starred as Leslie Knope in the beloved series Parks and Recreation, winning a Golden Globe for her performance. “Every single year at the Oscars, everybody [in comedy] gets blanked and all the serious people get up and accept and accept and accept,” Poehler said. “It’s some hot bullshit! Because comedy is not easy, and I got to tell you, both you and Olivia can do both.”
Although the Oscars have been more accepting of films that blend humor with drama, such as Anora and Everything Everywhere All at Once winning best picture in recent years, it seldom recognizes traditional comedies, such as the snubbed and stellar Bridesmaids in 2012.
And while Greta Gerwig’s cultural phenomenon, Barbie, garnered eight nods last year, Gerwig and star Margot Robbie did not make the nomination list for Best Director and Best Actress, respectively. Despite being the highest-grossing film worldwide of 2023, the movie ultimately lost out on Best Picture.
