Thurston Moore Cancels U.S. Book Tour Due to 'Debilitating' Health Condition

Thurston Moore will be skipping a U.S. tour to promote his memoir, Sonic Life, due to a “debilitating” health condition.

“It utterly bereaves me to pass on the news that I have been advised by my medical team here in the UK to cancel my upcoming USA book tour,” he wrote in a letter to fans on Tuesday. “For years I have been dealing with a longstanding health condition, though it has never seriously stopped me from touring and recording. Regardless it’s always been an underlying issue and as I reach my mid-60s this year it has become rather, and consistently, debilitating.”

“After a recent consultation, my doctors have strongly advised against me flying anywhere under any circumstance until they get it all sorted out,” he added

Moore said the news was “utterly distressing” since he’s worked hard on writing and editing his memoir and was “looking forward to talking about the book at all the events.”

“I’ll mostly miss being able to share with everyone who purchased tickets to exchange all manner of Sonic Youth storytelling and arcana,” he wrote. “Fingers firmly crossed I have a chance to make it up to you when I’m cleared for travel again.”

“As it is I am grateful to have such an awesome support system of love and attention at this moment. And to know how much love, respect, and appreciation we all share,” he ended his note. “For now, sending good energy, peace and love.”

Moore announced the autobiography back in May, calling it “the product of intensive research and deep dives into my memories and emotions.” It’s a tribute, in part, to the creative communities like punk and New York’s no-wave scene that influenced him.

Moore’s book arrives nearly a decade after his former Sonic Youth bandmate and ex-wife Kim Gordon’sown book, Girl in a Band. In addition to writing about her time in Sonic Youth, the book contained passages about her art and the breakdown of her and Moore’s marriage.

In 2017, Moore toldRolling Stonethat he hadn’t read her book. “I asked her publishers for an advance copy at the time, and they wouldn’t send me one,” he said. “So I was like, ‘OK. I know what the story is. I don’t feel the need to discuss my private world and my marriage publicly.’ … If I’m to pen a book, it would certainly be biographical with Sonic Youth, but I would have to write it without working in any salient personal stuff. I don’t feel a need to do that.”
