Sometimes you’re your own enemy in love. On Friday, Loyal Lobos released her single “Autosabotear,” which hears the singer reflect on her own failings in a relationship. It’s stunning video premieres today with Rolling Stone.
“‘Autosabotear’ is about the self-destructive tendencies that one has about love. Being loved and loving back is terrifying and complicated for everyone,” the rising star tells Rolling Stone. “But it is the reason why we all exist. Our own love relationship with ourselves is a battle and I’ve always brought chaos into love.”
“This song is very open and simple. I wanted it to be mostly just guitars and vocals because that’s how I started writing songs: alone in my room with my guitar,” she adds.
Diaz, the video’s director, took on the concept of self-sabotage by looking at it “from the absurd” as Silva is seen singing the soft lyrics while holding a flame near dynamite, or aiming an arrow at herself in the visual.
“To self-sabotage is to hinder oneself. To trip yourself up by believing that you are not capable of achieving the desires you have; the goals, dreams, and even the relationship you hope for,” Diaz says. “The inspiration for this video comes from looking at self-sabotage from the absurd. In that Loyal Lobos consciously does whatever she can to disadvantage herself. What could be more absurd than that?”
“Autosabotear” follows a string of singles Loyal Lobos has released this year, including “El Río,” “Si Volviera a Conocerte” and her May EP, Una Freak. Back in March, she told Rolling Stone that she was planning on releasing more introspective, Spanish music.
