Jimmy Kimmel will return to his namesake show starting tonight. This follows Disney’s decision to pull him “indefinitely” last week following comments the late-night host made about the conservative response to Charlie Kirk’s killing.
The widely publicized decision by ABC’s parent company raised concerns about the health of free speech in America, and followed FCC Chair Brendan Carr’s threats against Kimmel’s show. The decision to pull the show led to a flurry of criticism from politicians ranging from Barack Obama to Gavin Newsom. Even some Republicans, including Ted Cruz, criticized Carr’s actions.

In a statement announcing the decision to reinstate Kimmel, Disney said, “Last Wednesday, we made the decision to suspend production on the show to avoid further inflaming a tense situation at an emotional moment for our country. It is a decision we made because we felt some of the comments were ill-timed and thus insensitive. We have spent the last days having thoughtful conversations with Jimmy, and after those conversations, we reached the decision to return the show on Tuesday.”
How insensitive Disney execs actually found Kimmel’s comments is up for debate. According to reporting by Rolling Stone on the night of Kimmel’s suspension, “Multiple execs felt that Kimmel had not actually said anything over the line, the two sources say, but the threat of Trump administration retaliation loomed.”
