Treat Williams, the actor who starred in the 1979 musical filmHair and on the WB seriesEverwood, died Monday from a motorcycle accident at age 71.
His death was confirmed by his family in a statement to Rolling Stone.
“It is with great sadness that we report that our beloved Treat Williams has passed away tonight in Dorset, Vermont, after a fatal motorcycle accident. As you can imagine, we are shocked and greatly bereaved at this time,” read the statement. “Treat was full of love for his family, for his life and for his craft, and was truly at the top of his game in all of it. It is all so shocking right now, but please know that Treat was dearly and deeply loved and respected by his family and everyone who knew him.”
Barry McPherson, his agent of 15 years, told People that Williams was as “an actor’s actor,” adding, “Filmmakers loved him. He’s been the heart of the Hollywood since the late 1970s.”
Williams made his film debut in 1975 withDeadly Hero as the character Billings. The following year he landed a supporting role inThe Ritzand also appeared in John Sturges’ filmThe Eagle Has Landed.
The versatile actor was best known for his starring role as George Berger in Miloš Forman’s1979 musical film Hair, and his performance earned him a Golden Globe nomination. Williams has appeared in over 75 films and several television series; he was featured in Steven Spielberg’s1941(1979), Dead Heat(1988),Things to Do in Denver When You’re Dead(1995), andDeep Rising(1998).
Hollywood began to share tributes on Monday night following news of his death. Actor James Woodsposted a photo of Williams on Twitter and remembered their time together on set, “Treat and I spent months in Rome filmingOnce Upon a Time in America. It can be pretty lonely on the road during a long shoot, but his resilient good cheer and sense of humor was a Godsend. I really loved him and am devastated that he’s gone.”
