The story of Bianca Rudolph’s mysterious death on a Zambian safari with her husband — as reported in the 2022 Rolling Stone feature, “Before the Dentist Knows Your Dead” — is coming to the small screen.
The new three-part docuseries, titled Trophy Wife: Murder on Safari, will follow writer Matt Sullivan’s reporting of Rudolph’s death, her rich dentist husband, Larry, and the ensuing international murder investigation. Bianca’s death was ruled an accident by Zambian authorities, but Larry’s mistress(/hygienist) and other secrets raise suspicions from those in the U.S.
“After Larry is forced to choose between his wife of 34 years, Bianca, and his mistress, one of them is found dead in Larry’s safari cabin in Zambia,” the docuseries’ synopsis states. “The local authorities rule it an accident, but back in the U.S., suspicions mount. As investigators dig deeper, they uncover decades of salacious patterns in Larry’s personal and professional dealings, including affairs, fraud, and more. But the question remains: could this apparent egomaniac commit murder? And if so, does the FBI have the evidence to prove it?”
The docuseries also builds on Sullivan’s Rolling Stone feature with the outcome of following criminal proceedings and additional interviews with characters involved. The new interviews include “an eclectic cast of characters, including Larry’s former business partner, Milliron’s daughter, the Rudolphs’ insurance broker, FBI agents close to the case, the former U.S. ambassador to Zambia, and more. Members of Safari Club International and several of Larry’s former dental office employees also speak out, painting a disturbing picture of the man at the center of this shocking case.”
