Scarlett Johansson and Jonathan Bailey are super-friendly co-stars. So friendly, in fact, that they have shared a kiss on two occasions during premieres for their upcoming film, Jurassic World: Rebirth. Most recently, the actors caused a stir at the movie’s premiere in New York when they quickly locked lips in front of photographers.
And Bailey’s reason for the PDA? “I believe in being able to show love in all different ways,” Bailey told Entertainment Weekly during the New York premiere. “And if you can’t kiss your friends… life’s too short not to,” he added. And quite frankly, if we were friends with Scarlett Johansson, we’d feel the exact same.
Just last week, on June 17, Johansson and Bailey showed off their affectionate friendship with a peck on the lips at the Jurassic World: Rebirth London premiere. The two co-stars have been turning heads with their kisses, but as Bailey says, it’s not romantic at all. Johansson has been married to Colin Jost for four years, while Bailey is an openly gay man who prefers to keep his relationship status mostly private. Back in December 2023, the actor told the Standard that there was “a lovely man” in his life.
Recently, in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Bailey opened up about the challenges that come with being an actor as a gay man. “Any sort of sense of prejudice against sexuality is something to fight against, and what better way to do that than to go and play any kind of character,” Bailey said. “Being an out gay actor, historically, meant that you wouldn’t be able to play straight, and there weren’t any gay parts to play anyway. That’s obviously changed massively,” he added. Bailey’s biggest roles have been as heterosexual characters in Bridgerton and Wicked.
If you think Johansson and Bailey’s red carpet kisses have anything to do with the plot of Jurassic World: Rebirth, that’s not the case. The film follows Johansson’s Zora Bennett as she leads a team comprised of combat expert Duncan Kincaid (Mahershala Ali) and paleontologist Dr. Henry Loomis (Jonathan Bailey) on a top-secret mission to a remote island where the few surviving dinosaur species inhabit the land with the goal of obtaining the creatures’ DNA, which holds vital biomaterials that would aid in making a revolutionary drug. There’s not really a ton of time for on-screen kisses between Bennett and Dr. Loomis. For Johansson and Bailey, it’s really just for the love of the game.
