Jos. A. Bank got a shoutout on Saturday Night Live this weekend, putting the venerable menswear store back into the pop culture zeitgeist.
The mention came right off the top in the SNL cold open, which featured Donald Trump (James Austin Johnson) attempting to keep the peace after a reported riff between Marco Rubio (Marcello Hernández) and Elon Musk (Mike Myers). As Musk enters the oval office, his outfit is immediately taken to task by the president: “[He’s a] billionaire but he shops at Jos. A. Bank,” quips Johnson, in character as Trump.
The comment causes Myers’ Musk to temporarily “glitch,” but after a little “buffering,” he’s back to normal. The bit also caused Jos. A. Bank to trend online, with many commenters coming to the defense of the store, which has been outfitting guys across America for over 120 years, with more than 180 stores still operating nationwide.
Now owned by Tailored Brands, the same company behind Men’s Wearhouse, Jos. A. Bank is considered an All-American staple, but the company actually started as a small, immigrant-run business in Baltimore in 1905. Founded by Lithuanian settler Charles Bank and his grandson Joseph Alfred Bank, the menswear clothier found success in making tailored clothing and selling them directly to the customer (versus selling to large department stores, which was the norm as the time). Jos. A. Bank soon expanded to formalwear, and later to travel wear as well.

These days Jos. A. Bank is still a go-to for many men in American and for good reason — while the store still sells suits and tuxedos, it actually has entire collections of contemporary, trend-driven pieces as well. It’s a great option for cool and casual everyday pieces that take you from office to dates to vacations, and it makes Jos. A. Bank a worthy alternative to mall brands like J.Crew and Banana Republic too.
The new Jos. A. Bank pieces featuring slimmer cuts (like the tailored knit polo above), modern silhouettes, and streamlined colorways that read more “urban sophistication” and less “Southern charm.” You can still wear Jos. A. Bank to the country club, but you can also find pieces to sport at Soho House too.

The SNL mention was also serendipitously timely, as Jos. A. Bank currently has a Super Tuesday sale going on, with 30% off basically everything on the site. The store is also heading into two of its busiest seasons for rentals and purchases: high school prom and weddings.

And while “Elon” may have been sporting an ill-fitting suit on SNL, that’s more on him than Jos. A. Bank. In fact, a quick browse of the JosBank.com website reveals an entire selection of its bestselling “Slim Fit Suit.” We like the grey colorway below, which is classy enough to wear to a fancy event (with a shirt and tie) but casual enough to throw on over a T-shirt or polo for less formal fare.
