Released Feb. 4, the 24-page book follows Yeoh’s journey from growing up as a ballet dancer in Malaysia to winning an Oscar for her starring role in Everything Everywhere All at Once. It also offers up some rarely-known details about the actress’ life, including her win at the 1983 Miss Malaysia pageant and her early name change to Michelle Khan, after producers suggested a stage name for her to better appeal to international audiences.
Yeoh’s children’s book also details some of her most iconic roles, from her first acting job with martial arts star Jackie Chan, to memorable turns in films like James Bond’s Tomorrow Never Dies, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Crazy Rich Asiansand of course,Everything Everywhere All at Once.
Written for and by the AAPI community, the new release is authored by Angela Song and illustrated by Irene Chan. Publisher Golden Books says the Little Golden Biography honors Yeoh’s “commitment to her craft” and “her dedication to representation in media.” Most importantly, they say, “young readers will learn that with perseverance and grit, they too, like Michelle, can become the hero of their own stories.”
