Alicia Silverstone Says 'Clueless' Sequel Will 'Honor' the Original Film

Alicia Silverstone is confident that the upcoming Clueless sequel will “honor” the original. Speaking on Today, the actress said she’s “really excited”about the project, which she is also executive producing.

“I think we’re going to try really hard. The goal is to make it honor what everyone loves aboutCluelessand Cher,” Silverstone said. “So we want to honor that, but also bring something fresh and new to it. I’m confident that we’ll be able to do that, but we’re in baby stages right now.”

Earlier this year, it was reported that Silverstone would be reprising her role as Cher Horowitz in a sequel series at Peacock. No plot details were revealed about the series in the reporting, but Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage — the creative team behindGossip GirlandThe OC— are set to write the show with Jordan Weiss, who’s behindFreakier Friday. All three of them will executive produce the series under Fake Empire, with Silverstone also joining as an exec producer, alongside Amy Heckerling, who wrote and directed the original film, and Robert Lawrence, who produced it.

The originalCluelesswas released in 1995 and was loosely based on Jane Austen’s 1815 novel,Emma. Following the film’s success, a television spin-off premiered the following year and ran for three seasons with Rachel Blanchard playing Cher Horowitz in Silverstone’s place.

The actress spoke to Vogue about her iconic character in 2020, noting that “I think people identify with Cher’s heart and her willingness to change and grow because of how silly she was. She was trying hard to evolve because of her sweet Josh.” She added, “I don’t know how to explain why or what madeCluelesswhat it was, but I know it happened and I know that people continue to love it. And it never gets old, so that’s the good news.”

Silverstone last reprised her role as Cher in a2023 Super Bowl adfor Rakuten. She is currently starring in Irish Blood, a crime series that debuts on Aug. 11.
