Getting quality sleep is more important than ever, and having a high-quality mattress and bedding is an easy way to help you get more of it. But if you’re not quite ready to buy a brand-new Tempur-Pedic or Casper mattress (here are more of our favorites, in case you are), invest in a foam mattress topper. A basic egg-crate style foam mattress topper works in a pinch, but higher-quality foam and gel-infused toppers can help make a big difference when it’s time to get some shuteye.
The best foam mattress toppers use much of the same built-in tech and materials as foam mattresses do, just on a much smaller scale. If you want to upgrade your bed situation but ready to spring for a brand new mattress, a new foam mattress is a great place to start.
What’s the Best Foam Mattress Topper?
Temperature Regulating: There are a few different mattress topper features some brands claim can help keep you cool and, overall, comfortable. Foam infused with some kind of cooling gel is one common method. Another is foam punctured with tiny holes to promote air flow.
Type of Foam: We look for high-quality memory foam, in particular, which adjusts to the contours of your body while remaining firm enough to offer all-over support. Some toppers combine foam with a quilted pillow topper, which offers both the firm support of memory foam and cushy softness of pillows.
Thickness: The thicker the foam topper, the more support it will offer. We like to see at least three inches, and four inches is even better. Two inches of foam with two inches of pillow also works.
What to Avoid: The biggest complaints some have about foam toppers are that they aren’t firm enough to support your entire body or that they’re uncomfortable or too warm at night, so it’s best to consider what you like best in your mattress and bedding before adding one to your cart.
