Consumers have largely been spared the effects of Trump’s tariffs — so far. The stop-and-start rollout of the tariffs has given companies time to stockpile goods to stave off price increases, but that luck is starting to run out.
Starting tomorrow, Sony will hike the price of the PlayStation 5. It’s not the first post-tariff price bump from the tech giant, either; Sony’s flagship WH-1000XM6 headphones got a $50 price bump over the XM5 model. Likewise, the PS5 will cost $50 more as of Aug. 21, from $500 for the slim disc edition to $550. The Digital Edition will cost $500, while the PS5 Pro will cost $750.
In a blog post on the company’s website, PlayStation cited the “challenging economic environment” as the reason for the price hike, adding that “the recommended retail prices for PlayStation 5 accessories remain unchanged.”
Sony previously raised the price of the PS5 in the UK, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. As for other gaming consoles, Microsoft increased the price of the Xbox Series X, and Nintendo raised the price of the original Switch.
In short, it’s your last, best chance to pick up the PlayStation 5 for its pre-tariff price.
