Pete Townshend’s signature on-stage shoes were just re-released by Dr. Martens today, but this time with a major luxury upgrade. The lead guitarist of The Who was first spotted wearing the British footwear company’s 1460 boots during a performance in 1967, giving them the punk-rock platform they deserved and putting the brand on the mainstream map.
Now, nearly 57 years later (and 65 years since the 1460s first appeared on the market), Dr. Martens is revamping the style for a more modern aesthetic. Called the “1460 Love Letter Boots,” this new drop is a special tribute to the original boots that were created in the counterculture decade, but are slightly adjusted for the digital age.

“On April 1st, Dr. Martens will unveil a true collector’s item and one of the most premium iterations of the 1460 boot ever made, named the 1460 MIE Pascal Love Letter boot,” the brand said in the official press release. “It’s an homage to the enduring legacy of DM’s most famous silhouette, made at the brand’s original factory in Wollaston, Northamptonshire, England, where it all began. Only 1460 pairs will be produced — a nod to the boot’s name, which celebrates the date it was first made: April 1st, 1960.”
