Cheech and Chong Hit the Road — and the Joint — One Last Time in New Doc Trailer

Cheech and Chong reflect on their trailblazing career in the new trailer for Cheech & Chong’s Last Movie.

Directed by David Bushell, the film is part documentary, part buddy comedy — a “moviementary” as the trailer declares. The clip features plenty of traditional documentary fare, with a slew of archival footage that shows how Cheech and Chong developed their act, found their name, and rose from stoner favorites to pop culture icons.

The other part of the trailer (and film) follows Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong on a present-day road trip as they get honest about their legacy, their prolific output, and their occasionally fraught personal relationships. Though lest you think there’s no funny business here, early on in the clip, as the pair speed through the desert, Chong gripes, “We’re in the middle of fucking nowhere.”

“No, we’re southwest of fucking nowhere,” Marin replies. “We’re not in the middle yet.”

Cheech & Chong’s Last Movie debuted at South by Southwest last year and is now set to hit theaters on April 25. There will, however, be some early screenings, scheduled for — of course — 4/20 (and at 4:20 p.m., no less).

Speaking with Rolling Stone last year, Chong admitted the road trip sequences were sometimes “painful” to film, but both he and Marin agreed they captured the nature of their relationship. Marin recalled a moment when Bushell wanted him to put his arm around Chong, a suggestion he rejected because “it didn’t feel true to me.”

He continued: “I had to say, Look: Tommy and I are not best friends. We’re brothers. There’s a difference. And the thing about brothers is, you don’t always like each other. You get into vicious fights. But you always have your brother’s back. And that’s what those scenes are.”
