Chvrches singer Lauren Mayberry covered Depeche Mode‘s 1989 hit “Personal Jesus” during a recent solo show in Prague. Performing at the Rock Café, Mayberry and her backing band gave the tune an upbeat rendition, with live drum beats filling in for the classic synth notes.
Mayberry is a long-professed fan of Depeche Mode and Chvrches previously toured with the group. The musician has made a habit of including covers on her current tour. She has included renditions of songs like Madonna’s “Like A Prayer” and the 1975’s “Paris” on her set list, along with Chvrches’ own “Lungs.”
Mayberry recently released two solo singles, “Are You Awake?” and “Shame.” The musicianannounced her intentionto release songs outside of Chvrches earlier this year.
In a reflective Instagram post she wrote, “For a long time, I couldn’t imagine ever doing anything outside of Chvrches. Since I was 15 years old, I have always, only, ever been in a band,” she wrote. “I always wanted so badly to belong somewhere — to be one of the boys, and to fit in. But as I sail/stumble through this era of my life (your 20s really do go by in a flash, kids), it has started to feel like there are things I want to write and say and do that need to be done on my own.”
Though she has launched her solo career, Mayberry is also still very much in Chvrches, as she assured fans when sheannounced her solo tourin July. Earlier this month, Chvrches released anextended versionof its debut LP,The Bones of What You Believe. The group also shared a previously unreleased track, “Manhattan.”
In August, Chvrches collaborated with Death Cab For Cutie on a remix of the band’s new single“An Arrow in the Wall.”
