It’s the cutting, age-old story of nurture versus nature versus knifer. The teaser for the Dexter prequel, Dexter: Original Sin, shows the serial killer’s origin story as he’s growing up in Miami circa 1991. The original series ran for eight seasons, following serial killer Dexter Morgan (then played by Michael C. Hall) as he battled with his conscience and his “dark passenger,” the devil on his shoulder that pushed him to kill people he believed deserved it. Hall returns in the new series, which debuts on Showtime on Dec. 13, as a voiceover only, narrating young Dexter’s salad days.
Actor Patrick Gibson plays Dexter in the new series, with Christian Slater portraying his lovingly encouraging dad, Harry, who teaches the budding butcher a “code” by which to kill only the right people. “I am a killer, but I wasn’t born this way,” Hall’s voice says in the clip. “I was made by my history, by the people around me. They say it takes a village to raise a killer.” Clips of Gibson staring dementedly, à la Hall, and running through plastic-draped kill rooms, as well as Slater giving him a good talking-to play as he speaks.
The scenes also tease Dexter’s entry into the Miami police department, where he interns in the forensics department — the tutelage that leads to his job on Dexter as a blood-spatter analyst. They also feature the rest of the cast, which includes Patrick Dempsey, Christina Milian, and Sarah Michelle Gellar as a special guest star.
Fans of the series may be wary of a new installment since the original Dexter had one of the worst series finales in television history. And a reboot in 2021, Dexter: New Blood, arrived dead on arrival, according to Rolling Stone’s review.
