Elmo is not happy with the content shared by Elmo’s X account. On Tuesday, Sesame Street shared a statement on Elmo’s X addressing the antisemitic and racist content posted when the account was hacked over the weekend.
“On Sunday, Elmo’s X account was briefly hacked by an outside party, in spite of the security measures in place,” the statement read. “We strongly condemn the abhorrent antisemitic and racist content, and the account has since been secured. These posts in no way reflect the values of Sesame Workshop or Sesame Street, and no one at the organization was involved.”
The six now-deleted posts called on the muppet’s followers to “kill all Jews” and declared thatDonald Trumpis the “puppet” of Israeli Prime MinisterBenjamin Netanyahubecause “he is in the Epstein files.”
“Elmo says all Jews should die,” one of the posts read. Another post called on Trump to “release the files” and called him a “child fucker.”
A spokeswoman for Sesame Workshop confirmed that the account was hacked and that the organization was “working to restore full control” of the account. Elmo is known for sharing messages of love and kindness on his social media, often in a way that encourages adult fans to be part of the conversation. The spokesperson later confirmed that “the account has since been secured.”
Last night, Jon Stewart joked on The Daily Show that he’d want to have Elmo on the show. “This is what happens when you go too long without tickling Elmo,” Stewart joked. “The truth is, I’m being honest, Elmo at the time was great to work with. He was. Was there a ton of coke on set? Of course. But hateful, racist Elmo is not the Elmo that I remember. I know what’s in Elmo’s heart.”
Several hours before posting the statement Tuesday, Elmo’s X account shared a post from the perspective of the muppet thanking fans for their support. “Thank you for being kind to Elmo and all the people in your neighborhood. Elmo loves you,” wrote the beloved character.
