Elton John Cannot See Out of One Eye, but Says 'There's Hope and Encouragement'

Elton John‘s “severe” eye infection has caused him to lose sight in his right eye for four months. The singer-songwriter developed the infection over the summer while in the south of France. In September, John shared the news about the infection, and revealed it was impacting vision in one of his eyes. “It will take some time before sight returns to the impacted eye,” he wrote on Instagram at the time.

In a new interview with Good Morning America, John provided more details about his vision after Robin Roberts asked him about the status of his new album. “It’s been a while since I’ve done anything,” the singer-songwriter said, citing his loss of vision. “There’s hope and encouragement that it will be OK, but I’m kind of stuck at the moment… going into the studio and recording, I don’t know.” He added that sitting down for the interview was feasible, but that he cannot read lyrics or watch anything.

While his sight has been impacted, the music legend’s spirit remains strong. He recently teamed up with singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile for a new song “Never Too Late,” which soundtracks the latest documentary about his life. The documentary, also titled Never Too Late, was directed by R.J. Cutler and John’s husband, David Furnish. Never Too Late premiered on Nov. 15 with a limited theatrical release and will hit Disney+ on Dec. 13.

As John discussed the documentary with GMA, he remained grateful for all of his accomplishments, saying, “I’m the luckiest man in the world.”
