In today’s world, with growing conversations surrounding privilege and its impact on society, it is crucial for business leaders to be introspective and acknowledge their own privilege. Recognizing the advantages they possess can empower them to become role models in living responsibly with their privilege, not only for their employees but also for the world at large.
Privilege refers to unearned advantages individuals enjoy based on their social identity, such as race, gender, socioeconomic status or education. Business leaders often have access to resources, networks and opportunities that others may not enjoy, which can significantly influence their success. On a personal note, struggling to acknowledge my white privilege is a daily practice that I incorporate into my life. I’ve realized that reminding myself of my power is not a one-time thing, but an everyday lesson to be an example for others.
The first step for business leaders is to acknowledge their privilege. This involves recognizing that their achievements are not solely the result of personal merit but are influenced by external factors. By acknowledging privilege, leaders can cultivate empathy, become more trustworthy, gain a broader perspective of who they are in the world and understand the challenges faced by others within and outside their organizations.
