“Are you for real, tough love? Do you want to feel tough love?” These two questions, which form the chorus of Flyte’s new song “Tough Love,” make Florence Pugh exclaim, “Oh, my God” because of the way the duo lets their voices descend in harmony. But in a new video dubbed a “Mahagony Session,” the actress and singer joins Will Taylor and Nicolas Hill in Taylor’s Northeast London flat on a round of the song.
With Pugh, the trio sit at a table, Taylor’s record collection behind them, as they perform the track, first with Taylor and Hill playing acoustic guitar and singing the verses. Then Pugh joins them on the chorus and quickly gets over any jitters she may have felt. She also joins them in a second verse: “I’ve been feeding you fear/You’ve been keeping me thin/I’ve been trying my best to feel you near/Without me disappearing.” It ends with the three singers all singing in harmony, a cappella.
The single version of the track, released in July, featured Laura Marling with the group. It will appear on their upcoming Flyte album, due out Oct. 27. In addition to the album’s version of “Tough Love” with Marling, the duo have released “Speech Bubble,” “Defender,” and “Amy.”
After a string of European dates this fall, Flyte will support Rayland Baxter on a North American tour that runs from Oct. 21 to Nov. 11. They’ll then begin a North American headlining tour throughout the rest of November before another run of Irish and U.K. dates.
