Frasier has re-entered the building, and he’s just as snobby as the last time you saw him in Seattle. A new trailer for the smash sitcom’s reboot series has finally arrived ahead of its premiere on Oct. 12 on Paramount+.
The new clip opens with arguably the most Frasier of scenes: Kelsey Grammer’s titular character returning to his Boston bar roots and waxing philosophically/ridiculously about a cold beer. “What is it about the city of Boston that leads me to forgo the more sophisticated temptation of the fermented grape? Sitting here with a cold brew in my hand, I feel amalgamated with the hoi polloi!”
The rest of the clip offers a brief survey of Frasier’s new life back in Boston, where he gets a new job teaching while trying to fortify his relationship with his adult son Freddy (Jack Cutmore-Scott). It remains to be seen if Grammar and Cutmore-Scott can recreate the glorious inter-generational conflicts of taste that defined Frasier’s relationship with his father Marty (played by the late great John Mahoney) in the original series. But there are glimpses: Frasier demanding his son not sit on his Christian Lacroix pillows while wearing jeans and gasping with dismay when he realizes Freddy’s “top shelf” scotch is just scotch kept on the top shelf.
Cutmore-Scott leads a largely new cast for the Frasier revival, which also includes Nicholas Lyndhurst as Frasier’s old college friend-turned-university professor Alan; Toks Olagundoye as Olivia, a colleague of Alan’s and head of the psychology department; Jess Salgueiro as Freddy’s roommate Eve; and Anders Keith as Frasier’s nephew, David, son of Niles and Daphne from the original show (tragically, though, neither David Hyde Pierce nor Jane Leeves will return for the reboot).
Despite Hyde Pierce and Leeves’ absence, a few old favorites from the extended Frasier/Cheers universe will reportedly be making guest appearances on the reboot. Peri Gilpin is set to reprise her role as Roz Doyle, while Bebe Neuwirth will be back as Lilith Sternin, Frasier’s ex-wife, and Freddy’s mother.
