Being a supermodel is not always glamorous, as the original four (Naomi Campbell,Linda Evangelista,Cindy Crawford, andChristy Turlington) divulge in a new four-part docuseries. Beyond the jet-setting, lavish evenings, and racks of clothes, The Super Models is an exposé into the industry’s darker sides.
“It’s fashion and it’s fun and light,” filmmaker Roger Ross Williams tells Rolling Stone. “…but also it’s life. They all had very tough and emotional moments. It was important for both of us to tell that part of the story.”

The documentary remains honest when telling the stories of these four women — from recapping experiences of physical and mental abuse to the destructive nature the fashion industry can have on self-worth. “It’s easier said than done to leave an abusive relationship,” Evangelista says softly in a clip, in tears as she recounts her marriage to modeling agent Gérald Marie. “I understand that because I lived it.” As the series progresses and each tells their story, the heartache and pain twisted into an industry of vanity and standards becomes abruptly clear.
The Super Models, though joyous and celebratory at times, is not a documentary viewed through rose-colored glasses. Whether you’re a fashion buff or not, it’s a complex dose of reality that’s worth the watch.
