Hunter Schaferwas taken into police custody while protesting for Palestine withJewish Voice for Peaceon Monday. The demonstration took place outside of President Joe Biden’s Late Night With Seth Meyers appearance in New York City.
“On Monday, February 26, 2024, at approximately 1630 hours, there was a demonstration at 30 Rockefeller Plaza, in the confines of the Midtown North Precinct,” an NYPD spokesperson tells Rolling Stone. “The demonstration concluded at 1800 hours. A total of 30 individuals were taken into custody. Thirty individuals were issued summonses for Trespass.”
Pro-Palestinian demonstrators gathered at the NBC headquarters in New York Cityon Monday afternoon to disrupt Biden’s appearance onLate Night with Seth Meyers, and demand the President call for a full ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war. Photos show protesters wearing black shirts that read “Cease Fire Now.” In some photos, they can be seen holding up a sign with the words: “Jews to Biden: Stop Arming Genocide.” While not confirmed, in some photos, the Euphoria star appears to be wearing a shirt calling for a ceasefire.
“We can confirm that Hunter Schafer attended the Jewish Voice Peace disruption inside the 30 Rock lobby, held while President Biden was in the building for his interview with Seth Meyers on Monday afternoon,” a spokesperson for Jewish Voice for Peace tells Rolling Stone. “Hunter was arrested at the protest, along with 50 other people. We commend her commitment to Palestinian freedom and to a future of justice for everyone.”
A rep for Schafer did not respond to Rolling Stone’s request for comment.
Last October, more than 50 celebrities, including Jennifer Lopez, Drake, Ben Affleck, Jordan Peele, Cate Blanchett, Jessica Chastain,Joaquin Phoenix,and Jon Stewart, signed an open letter to Biden asking him to “call for an immediate de-escalation and ceasefire in Gaza andIsraelbefore another life is lost.”
As tension over theIsrael-Hamaswar have escalated across the world, some celebrities have paid a price for their comments on the ongoing conflict. Back in November, after Susan Sarandon said that people feeling afraid of being Jewish at this time were “getting a taste of what it feels like to be a Muslim in this country, so often subjected to violence” at a pro-Palestine rally, the Oscar-winning actresswas dropped by her talent agency UTA, where she’d been a client since 2014. (She later issued an apology, calling her “phrasing” a “terrible mistake.”)
That same month, Spyglass Mediafired Melissa Barrera from “Scream VII” after the actress accused Israel of “genocide and ethnic cleansing” and “brutally killing innocent Palestinians, mothers and children, under the pretence of destroying Hamas.”
Israel’s retaliatory siege against Gaza following the Oct. 7 terrorist attacks by Hamas, which killed 1,400 Israelis, has now killedmore than 29,000 Palestinians.Although Biden claimed on Monday that a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas could begin in roughly a week, Israeli and Hamas officials cautioned against the president’s hope for an imminent ceasefire in the war.
