Biden Underwent Surgery to Remove Skin Cancer Lesions, Says Spokesperson

Former President Joe Biden underwent surgery to remove skin cancer lesions, a spokesperson for Biden said Thursday.

The health update from Biden’s office arrived after the television show Inside Edition aired footage of the former president greeting supporters outside a church in Delaware with what appeared to be a large scar above his right eye.

His spokesperson Kelly Scully confirmed it was a Mohs surgery, a type of procedure used to treat skin cancers, per the Associated Press. Scully did not specify when Biden had the surgery done.

In May, the former presidentwas diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer. “While this represents a more aggressive form of the disease, the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive which allows for effective management,” his personal office said in a statement at the time. “The president and his family are reviewing treatment options with his physicians.”

Biden had a previous lesion removed from his chest in 2023 while president, the growth was basal cell carcinoma, a common type of skin cancer. Dr. Kevin O’Connor, who was serving as Biden’s White House physician, said in a memo that year that “all cancerous tissue was successfully removed” and that the biopsy site had “healed nicely.”

The Biden family has dealt with multiple cancer battles. The president’s son Beau died of a brain tumor at 46, and First Lady Jill Biden had two cancerous skin lesions removed in 2023.
