Kacey Musgraves Covers Chappell Roan's 'Pink Pony Club' at U.S. Tour Kickoff

Kacey Musgraves has brought her Saturn stateside. The country singer kicked off the U.S. leg of her Deeper Well World Tour in State College, Pennsylvania, at the Bryce Jordan Center on Wednesday night. The date follows the tour debut in Europe this past spring, which Musgraves wrapped up in May.

The singer enchanted the State College audience and delivered a few special treats: an abridged cover of Chappell Roan’s “Pink Pony Club” and a performance of her breakthrough single “Follow Your Arrow,” from 2013’s Same Trailer Different Park. “Your internet bullying has paid off because I haven’t played this song live in about, I don’t know, a decade. You fucking win, okay,” Musgraves told the audience before breaking into a sweet, acoustic rendition of the fan-favorite while a giant, illuminated Saturn hung above a satellite stage.

Despite its success, when “Follow Your Arrow” was first released it was met with raised eyebrows by some in the country music industry and a segment of more conservative fans over its marijuana reference and support of the LGBTQ community. In 2013, the CMA Awards even censored Musgraves’ performance of the song when she sang the line “roll up a joint.” In 2024, Rolling Stone ranked “Follow Your Arrow” number 36 in The 200 Greatest Country Songs list.

Musgraves closed out the night with “High Horse,” “Deeper Well,” and “Rainbow.” Nickel Creek and Father John Misty served as openers in Pennsylvania. Father John Misty will continue supporting Musgraves through October, and Lord Huron will join the tour from November through December. The Deeper Well tour will stop in major cities like New York and Los Angeles before wrapping up in Nashville on Dec. 7.
