It was only a matter of time before Karol G stepped into the luxury liquor space — and what better way than with her own tequila? On Thursday, the Colombian music icon (and soon-to-be Coachella headliner) announced the launch of her 200 Copas line with Casa Dragones, revealing that she’s also now an investor in the brand.

“I’ve always felt so inspired by Mexican culture: from novelas to Thalía, and my platonic love Selena… Mexican culture has really informed me in my artistry and my personality as well,” Karol G tells Rolling Stone. “I have so much respect for Mexico and its culture. And tequila is my favorite drink at any party.”

Karol says part of her motivation to join the Casa Dragones family was working with Bertha González Nieves, the first female maestra tequilera, joining forces as Latina entrepreneurs in a male-dominated space. The name of the tequila comes directly from a corrido she included on her album KG0516, the project before the Mañana Será Bonito era.

“When I released ‘200 Copas,’ I had the idea of making a tequila that immortalized that era, because I felt like it deserved more,” explains Karol. “It’s taken us three years to craft this, and we worked so hard to deliver the best product.”

The 200 Copas tequila is the first Cristalino-style tequila released by the brand. And Karol makes it clear: this is far from a limited-edition collab or a simple brand endorsement. It’s a full new addition to the established Mexican brand’s portfolio that involves Karol every step of the way — from its recipe, made from 100% Blue Weber Agave aged more than a year in custom American oak barrels, to the bottle design that nods to Karol’s artistry. “This is a tequila that we are betting on with soul, heart, and our lives,” says Karol.

González Nieves explains that the new liquor line is meant to have a crystal-clear body with bright hues, notes of citrus, pine, and florals, along with creamy notes of almond, roasted agave, and plum. It’s a small-batch tequila with no more than 500 cases produced at a time.

“When I connected with Karol, I met a visionary that has such a passion for the tequila industry and for Mexico. As entrepreneurs, as women, it was so important to do this,” González Nieves says. “We had such a connection about visions for the future and uniting to make something new. It’s such an honor to work with Karol to make something so special.”

Karol hopes 200 Copas will be included in her fans’ most special moments: when it’s time to celebrate, on first dates, or even when you’re trying to get through heartbreak — just like the one she sings about in “200 Copas,” the song.

Fans may have spotted the specially crafted bottle already during her history-making Mañana Será Bonito tour, which saw her tease the drink, pulling it out during her performance of “200 Copas” each night.

“I’ve drunk this tequila throughout the entire Mañana Será Bonito tour. That might be the most beautiful thing about this whole thing. When I started my tour in Mexico, I went to Guadalajara because we had just elected the type of tequila we would be making,” says Karol. “The first bottles we made traveled with me. For every cheer during the tour, we were already using this tequila. It already has a soul!”

But what’s on the playlist for 200 Copas? “Oh! You’re giving us a good idea! I’m writing in my notes now: ‘We need a playlist for 200 Copas’ launch,’” responds Karol, pulling out her phone. “Thanks for the idea, Rolling Stone! That’s incredible!”
