Latto Wants a Summer Love on New Single 'Somebody'

Latto is ready to have some fun in the sun on her latest single “Somebody,” a warm ode to summer loving. The record marks the rapper’s first solo release since sharing her latest album Sugar Honey Iced Tea in 2024 and continues to build upon that thematic thread. The record arrives with a video that finds the rapper miles away from Atlanta, lounging in the sand and sunbathing on a bamboo raft. The visual was directed by Latto’s sister, Brooklyn Nikole.

“Somebody” builds around an interpolation of Aaliyah’s 1998 single “Are You That Somebody?” On the chorus, Latto flips the classic into a refrain of yearning and desire, rapping: “I ain’t never tell nobody/All I want is you, boy, all I want is you/All I need is you, boy, all I need is you/It’s just me and you boy, it’s just me and you/I really need somebody/Tell me you’re that somebody.”

Since releasing Sugar Honey Iced Tea, Latto has let the album breathe, rather than following it with a flood of singles. She shared the “Blick Sum” remix with Playboi Carti in January, but otherwise kept a low profile until it was time for “Somebody” to arrive. “Though her third album, Sugar Honey Iced Tea, is a nearly frictionless listen, the intention and effort it takes to make something so cohesive, skillful, and succinct is undeniable,” Rolling Stone‘s Mankaprr Conteh wrote in a review of the album. “Throughout the album, she sounds confident, comfortable, and in control.”

Keeping the flow of her releases steady, but not overwhelming, has been instrumental in allowing Latto to maintain this sense of confidence and control. “I feel like me having this slow and steady incline has been more beneficial to me than just blowing up super fast and then setting this high tone that I’m forever gonna be chasing in my career. You know what I’m saying? I’m grateful for the baby steps,” she toldEbonylast year.
