Lil Nas X Is on the Case in Detective-Inspired Single 'Here We Go'

Lil Nas X, a.k.a. Detective Montero, has dropped a new single, “Here We Go,” written for Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. The fast-talking song sees the rapper on the hunt for justice: “Tell them boys you better hide/ Tell them lay low/ Tell them play it safe cause we don’t play at all/ Tell them boys you better move.”

The single was produced by Ojivolta and written by Lil Nas X, Harold Faltermeyer, Raul Cubina, Mark Williams, and Jarrod Morgan. It includes an interpolation of the original “Axel F” theme song from the 1984Beverly Hills Copfilm, written and performed by Faltermeyer.The track is featured in the film several times, according to a press release, and will play over the end credits.

Lil Nas X also joined Eddie Murphy for a discussion about how the song came together on Instagram. “It’s just exciting to have some new music and have this brother be the one that’s on it,” Murphy noted.

Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, out July 3,stars Murphy as Detective Axel Foley, who is back on the beat in Beverly Hills. It also stars Taylour Paige, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Judge Reinhold, and John Ashton. The official synopsis notes, “After his daughter’s life is threatened, she and Foley team up with a new partner and old pals Billy Rosewood and John Taggart to turn up the heat and uncover a conspiracy.”

Back in the Nineties, a fourth installment was announced but never materialized and in the mid-2010s, a movie wasplanned to shoot in Michiganbut waspostponeddue to a half-baked script. When speaking withRolling Stoneabout a potentialBeverly Hills Cop IVin 2011, Murphy said, “None of the movie scripts were right; it was trying to force this premise. If you have to force something, you shouldn’t be doing it. It was always a rehash of the old thing. It was always wrong.”
