The creative process is mysterious, and it can be kicked off by something as world-altering as a breakup or as everyday as a cool-looking water bottle.
Rolling Stonecover star Lordeshowed off some items and objects that inspired and accompanied her in recording Virgin, her latest album. You can check out the entire clip below.
Some of these artifacts are one-of-a-kind, like the box of written materials and photos, some are the kind of thing you can pick up at the corner store, like 5 Gum and duct tape, while others are a little more luxe, like Japanese cloths or Apple headphones.
You can check out some of the objects below and grab tickets for her tour here. The first single from Virgin is “What Was That,” while the album will be released on June 27.

“So I bought this bottle and it became like a talisman of this album. And I like how dinged up it is. I bought this in 2023, and there was nothing deep to it. I’m super into anodized metal. It has like a magical quality to me. It reminds me of my first iPod; I had a purple iPod nano.”

5 Gum

“5 Gum came out when I was a teenager. I connect it with this like, Vitamin Water, these sexy everyday products… it totally connects to me to this young, excited version of myself, where I just thought I was so cool and it was all possibility. Chewing this in the studio, something about that brought me into myself in a way that I really liked. Unfortunately, the flavor of this is disgusting to me now.”

T. Rex Tape

“I chose it at a hardware store in Vermont on the way to a psilocybin therapy weekend. The boots that I had with me were leaking, and it was snowy, so I bought this tape and I taped the toe of my boots… this connected me to a part of myself that is not totally sealed up, needs a bit of short-term reinforcement.”

“It has the same feeling of a baseball cap, I feel very, like, I’ve got armor on or something … the thing about my devices is they get dinged to hell, the phone is super smashed. I really believe we should treat these devices with a little irreverence.”
