The question Martin Scorsese has been asking through the lens of film for the duration of his decades-long career reappears in the first trailer forhis latest project, Mr. Scorsese. “Who are we? Are we intrinsically good, or evil?” the filmmaker asks. “This is the struggle.”
Premiering on Oct. 17 on Apple TV+, the five-part docuseries delves into Scorsese’s own history to explore the answer. Directed by Rebecca Miller, the series will feature footage from the director’s personal archives while also utilizing the extensive archive of his filmography. The trailer itself features footage from some of his most defining releases, including The Departed, Raging Bull, The Aviator, Wolf of Wall Street, New York, New York, and more.
Mr. Scorsese will feature appearances from a number of figures who appeared in these films, as well as other friends, peers, and collaborators. The guest lineup includes Robert De Niro, Daniel Day-Lewis, Leonardo DiCaprio, Mick Jagger, Robbie Robertson, Thelma Schoonmaker, Steven Spielberg, Sharon Stone, Jodie Foster, Paul Schrader, Margot Robbie, Cate Blanchett, Jay Cocks, and Rodrigo Prieto.
Scorsese’s wife, Helen Morris, and their children will be featured in the series alongside his close childhood friends as he reflects on and examines more than eight decades of his life.
A synopsis of the series describes it as “a cinematic portrait of a man through the lens of his work, exploring the many facets of a visionary who redefined filmmaking, including his extraordinary career and unique personal history,” adding, “Mr. Scorsese examines how his life informed his artistic vision as each film he made stunned the world with originality. Starting with his New York University student films through to the present day, the documentary explores the themes that have fascinated Scorsese and informed his work, including the place of good and evil in the fundamental nature of humankind.”
