Being a leader isn’t about commanding authority; it’s about fostering genuine connections, inspiring motivation, and building a thriving culture.
As a business leader and former athlete, I’ve been on countless teams through the years. I’m drawing upon my experience to help you become a better, more effective leader.
Here are the 10 most important things to understand.
1. Embrace Empathy and Understanding
Effective leadership begins with a deep understanding of your team members’ personalities, aspirations, and challenges. Take the time to actively listen, empathize, and acknowledge their feelings. Some ways I practice this with my own team are things like celebrating their small wins, buying small gifts for holidays, and remembering their birthday. To paraphrase Theodore Roosevelt, people don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.
2. Master the Art of Communication
Communication lies at the heart of leadership. Craft your messages with clarity, authenticity, and relevance. I like to have in-person conversations whenever possible to avoid misunderstandings of tone or message, which happens often via email, text, and even Zoom. Communicate often, and try to listen more than you speak. And remember — it’s not just about what you say, but how you say it.
3. Inspire Through Vision
Great leaders inspire action by painting a compelling vision of the future. Communicate your vision with passion and clarity, inspiring your team to join you on the journey. Be specific and ambitious in how you articulate your vision. Never play it small. Be sure to acknowledge your team often for their help. This creates a sense of purpose and belonging for those who come along for the ride. In my own ventures, I’m frequently reminding my teams about our standard of excellence, and how everything we do is helping build their skills and character. Your team members need to understand how joining your vision can improve not only the business but their own overall quality of life.
4. Lead by Example
Actions speak louder than words. Model the behavior you wish to see in others. Demonstrate integrity, resilience, attention to detail, and a commitment to continuous improvement. Commit yourself to excellence and being the best you possible. Your actions and work ethic will inspire trust and loyalty among your team members. I personally do this with my own teams by ensuring I hold myself to the highest standard across all aspects of the team. This includes punctuality, time management, communication, sales, and more. A team must always have someone to model their behavior after.
5. Foster Collaboration and Inclusivity
Build a culture of collaboration where every voice is heard and valued. Encourage diversity of thought, perspectives, and experiences. One of my favorite ways to do this is by giving opportunities for my staff to present their own ideas during meetings. If each person on your team feels like they’re playing an important part in a very bright future, they’ll be much more committed to helping ensure that an ambitious future becomes a reality.
6. Celebrate Small Wins
Recognize and celebrate the achievements of your team members. Acknowledge their contributions publicly, both within your organization and on social media platforms. Some easy ways to do this is by acknowledging work anniversaries, surpassing sales quotas, and social media growth. By shining a spotlight on their accomplishments, you not only boost morale but also inspire others to strive for excellence. Praise in public, coach in private.

7. Cultivate a Growth Mindset
Encourage a culture of continuous learning and growth. Foster an environment where mistakes are viewed as opportunities for improvement rather than failures. Use storytelling and metaphors to make ideas relatable and easy to understand. Your team never loses — they either win, or they learn. Share insights and resources, along with providing direction for where to find continued education for them. This will foster a community of lifelong learners.
8. Empower Others
True leadership is not about gaining power for youself, it’s about empowering others around you. Delegate tasks, provide autonomy, and offer support and guidance when needed. Create opportunities for skill development and leadership advancement. By investing in growth and development, you can cultivate a loyal and high-performing team.
9. Practice Gratitude and Humility
Never underestimate the power of gratitude and humility in leadership. Take the time to express appreciation for the efforts of your team members. Admit mistakes, seek feedback, and learn from failures. By showing humility, you earn the respect and admiration of those you lead.
10. Use your Heart
Above all, lead with compassion, authenticity, and a genuine desire to make a positive impact. Build meaningful connections with your team members and followers, both online and offline. Remember, the best leaders are not just masters of strategy and execution but also champions of the human spirit.
Becoming the best leader possible requires a combination of heart, brain, and voice. By embracing empathy, communication, vision, and collaboration, you can inspire greatness, foster innovation, and build a legacy that transcends generations.
As Dale Carnegie famously said, “The only way to influence the other fellow is to talk about what he wants and show him how to get it.” So, go forth, lead with purpose and leave a lasting impact on the world.
