The Naked Gun stars Liam Neeson as Lt. Frank Drebin Jr., the son of the character first inhabited by Leslie Nielsen in 1988. Neeson’s comedy chops have typically been brief cameos, including Life’s Too Short, Derry Girls, and Anchorman 2, but the Oscar-nominee’s affinity for comedy is no secret. Rolling Stone’s David Fear praised Neeson’s comedy performance, writing “The fact that he’s played exactly this kind of role in loads of dead-serious dramas only makes his straight-faced take on Lt. Frank Drebin Jr.’s total ineptitude and Draconian sense of law enforcement that much funnier.”
The Naked Gun also stars Pamela Anderson, Danny Huston, and CCH Pounder, with cameos from Busta Rhymes, Weird Al Yankovic, and Dave Bautista. If you’re looking to catch up on (or revisit) the rest of the franchise, here’s what you need to know.
