Natalia Lafourcade Embraces a New Alter-Ego as She Announces One-Take Album 'Cancionera'

Natalia Lafourcade has a new alter ego, and she’s ready to share it. On Tuesday, the Mexican musician announced her upcoming album, titled Cancionera, which she recorded in one take on analog tape.

Lafourcade announced the record, produced by Adan Jodorowsky, with a short trailer featuring a retro performance of her songs in front of a theater curtain, acting out Shakespearian scenes, and strumming her guitar accompanied by an orchestra.

The album is set to explore both tradition and the contemporary, returning to “the intimacy of her voice and guitar,” according to a press release. She’ll also feature Hermanos Gutiérrez, El David Aguilar, Israel Fernandez, Diego Del Morao, Gordon Hamilton, and Soundwalk Collective on the record.

The album will feature original songs, including title track “Cancionera,” along with “reinterpretations of traditional Mexican music” while taking direct inspiration from her home state of Veracruz.“The Veracruz culture has deeply influenced the way I understand music,” Natalia says of the album. “In this new album, that influence manifests in the rhythms and the poetics of its lyrics.”

Cancionera continues the singer’s artistic partnership with Jodorowsky, who also produced her Grammy-winning De Todas Las Flores. “If we recorded Natalia and started editing her takes in search of some elusive sense of perfection, then the music would lose its soul,” he previously told Rolling Stone. “On this record, we went even further than in De Todas las Flores. We had 18 musicians playing together with Natalia in a live setting. There are no tricks, no contrivances of any kind.”

She’s set to bring the album on the road with a show that will feature new arrangements to match the LP. She’ll open her run with concerts across Mexico, before visiting opera houses and theaters across the United States throughout the summer and into the fall.

“For some time now, I have dreamed of returning to the stage in a different way — perhaps more intimately, closer to my audience,” Natalia said. in a press release. “My desire is to share the intimacy I experience with my songs in my room, in my home, in my personal universe, or even in my own imagination.”
