The last season of Sex Education has a crowded lesson plan. The series returns to Netflix on Sept. 21 with its teenage and adult characters equally as misdirected in their love lives and sense of purpose. “People are doing all these new things, and I feel like I’m getting left behind,” Otis (Asa Butterfield) admits in the latest full-length trailer for the show’s fourth and final season.
Starting fresh at Cavendish Sixth Form College, Otis and his friends from Moordale Secondary are thrust into a host of new sexual experiences and personal growth as they consider their futures. Eric (Ncuti Gatwa) is fully moving on from his past relationships, Adam (Connor Swindells) is working on a farm for some reason, and Aimee (Aimee Lou Wood) is turning her erotic encounters into a seemingly abstract act.
Over in America, Maeve (Emma Mackey) is stepping into her creative power and new life away from home, but she’s still tethered to Otis. And when she returns to Moordale for her first real date with him, he has a lot on his plate already. On top of feeling like everyone else is passing him by, the teenage sex therapist is weathering his new competition on campus, and his crumbling family life as his mother (Gillian Anderson) attempts to raise a new baby on her own.
The show’s last eight episodes have a lot to unpack, but creator, lead writer, and executive producer Laurie Nunn feels Sex Education has run its course. “This was not an easy decision to make, but as the themes and stories of the new season crystallised, it became clear that this was the right time to graduation,” she explained in a letter to fans.
Kedar Williams-Stirling, Mimi Keene, George Robinson, Chinenye Ezeudu, Dua Saleh, Alistair Petrie, Samantha Spiro, Jim Howick, Rakhee Thakrar, and Daniel Ings will also appear throughout the season. The series finale will have a run time of 83 minutes.
“We are incredibly proud of Sex Education and feel indebted to our brilliant writers, cast and crew who put so much heart into making every episode,” Nunn continued. “They have worked tirelessly to bring you this final season, and we can’t wait to share it with you. Goodbyes are the worst, but let’s celebrate all the good times we’ve had.”
