NewJeans Immortalize 'League of Legends' With 'Gods' Championship Anthem

NewJeans delivered a winner for this year’sLeague of LegendsWorld Championship anthem, making them the first K-pop group in the game’s history to provide a song for the event.

“Gods” also marks the 10th anniversary of anthems for the game’s world championship. The new track arrived on Wednesday along with a video featuring Korean pro player Kim “Deft” Hyuk-kyu. According to a press release, the visual follows his story “from his discovery ofLeague of Legendsin high school, to his run at Worlds 2022 alongside his team that overcame all odds to become World Champions.”

The group swaps their usual pop and R&B sound for heavy-hitting synths as they sing, “One more step, you’re immortal now ’cause/Once you play God, once you play God/They’re gonna crumble one by one/ Then we gonna ride right into the sun/Like it’s the day my kingdom come.”

The teen K-pop group spoke with Rolling Stone earlier this year for Future 25,a selection of rising artists reinventing and dominating the music industry. Minji, Hanni, Danielle, Haerin, and Hyein released theirfour-song debut EP last year, making them one of the fastest–rising emerging artists, with more than 83 million global on-demand streams.

And at this year’s Lollapalooza, NewJeanswere the first K-pop girl group to play the Chicago festival and performed their entire latest EPGet Up, which made its first entry on theBillboard200 and debuted at Number One.

“Everything about our new songs is … fresh,” Hanni told Rolling Stone when speaking about their latest project. “Compared to our previous releases, this new mini album definitely has a lot more variety to offer, in not just genre of music and dance style, but what we are striving to express and show to you.” She added: “I think we are stepping into an area of music that hasn’t been experimented with or tried very often before.”
