Nicole Kidman, Sandra Bullock Cast Their 'Practical Magic' Sequel Spell Decades Ago

Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock made their witch wishes for a Practical Magic sequel before they were done completing the first film nearly 30 years ago. In an interview with Variety, Kidman revealed that she and her co-star were already thinking up ways for the story to continue while on set.

“When we were making it, we definitely did,” Kidman said. “We’re so excited. Yes, yes, beyond excited. You heard our spell. We put out our spell already.” Their wish will officially come true on Sept. 18, 2026, when Practical Magic 2 hits theaters with Kidman and Bullock reprising their roles as Gillian and Sally Owens.

“I just remember loving the film,” Kidman told Rolling Stone last year. “I won’t be pulled off it if I love it. And I love it! As people say, ‘sticks and stones may break [my] bones, but words will never hurt me.’ I stick to what I like, it doesn’t sway me. I’ve probably made a lot of films like that.”

Bullock added: “Well, ‘Hollywood’ made the movie and fully leaned into it. They may have regretted it once we got eviscerated, but they were brave enough to make it back then, so for that I am so grateful.”

Practical Magic was released in 1998. It introduced the Owens sisters and their curse to perpetually fall in love with men who met untimely demises. The cult classic film was adapted from Alice Hoffman’s eponymous book and directed by Griffin Dunne. The storyline for the sequel has not yet been revealed, though Susanne Bier will direct it, working from an Akiva Goldsman-crafted screenplay.

Per Variety, the upcoming film is expected to be adapted from a later book in Hoffman’s Practical Magic series. Shooting has not yet started, though Kidman told the outlet that the sequel is “moving ahead rapidly.”
