Being in a boyband isn’t always what it’s cracked up to be. In the upcoming documentary, Larger Than Life: Reign of The Boybands, both the highs and lows of boy band hysteria are examined — from the eardrum-splitting screams and the flashy “I Love You” posters to dangerous car chases and grueling schedules. “Some things are a little bit too crazy to talk about,” 98 Degrees member Jeff Timmons says in the trailer, which was released Monday.
The documentary features interviews with members of some of the most iconic boy bands, including AJ McLean of the Backstreet Boys, Chris Kirkpatrick and Lance Bass of ’Nsync, Donnie Wahlberg of New Kids on the Block, Nick Lachey and Timmons of 98 Degrees, Donny Osmond of the Osmonds, Michael Bivins of New Edition, and Hoshi and Vernon of Seventeen. In the trailer, they all reflect on the global impact of boy band stardom.
“The music business teaches you how to believe in yourself, but what it doesn’t prepare you for is your downfall,” Bivins said in the trailer.
The doc catalogs iconic crews through the ages, from the groundbreaking influence of the Beatles, the Nineties, and early 2000s groups like One Direction and the ones mentioned above to the global rise of K-pop crews like Seventeen.
Johnny Wright, who has managed ’NSync and New Kids on the Block, produced the documentary, and Tamra Davis (Jean-Michel Basquiat: The Radiant Child) directed it. Larger than Life: Reign of The Boybands premieres Nov. 12 on Paramount+.
