Paul Thomas Anderson Returns With Guns Blazing in 'One Battle After Another' Teaser Trailer

It’s been four years since Paul Thomas Anderson released his most recent feature film. But the director will return on Sept. 26 with One Battle After Another — and he’s coming back with guns blazing. The first-look teaser trailer for the film stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Teyana Taylor, and Chase Infiniti moving through different stages of life while dodging both literal and metaphorical bullets.

When Taylor first appears at the start of the teaser, her extended pregnant belly stands out in contrast to the machine gun she’s holding down the trigger on. “What are you gonna do about this baby?” DiCaprio’s character is asked in the brief clip as the camera focuses on a baby girl with big, curious brown eyes. DiCaprio’s own eyes are full of uncertainty. And when it flashes to Infiniti a moment later, there’s focus and determination reflected in her calm stare — until a few seconds pass and she’s shrieking like a banshee. “Just when you think you got a handle on things,” DiCaprio says.

One Battle After Another also stars Regina Hall, Sean Penn, Alana Haim, Wood Harris, Benicio del Toro, and Shayna McHayle. The film recently received its new release date after Warner Bros. Pictures pushed back its initial August 2025 theatrical arrival. Earlier this year, Variety reported that the film will need to bring in at least $300 million in global ticket sales to turn a profit theatrically on its $140 million budget.

The film is loosely based on Thomas Pynchon’s Vineland, originally published in 1990. Anderson’s 2014 film Inherent Vice was based on Pynchon’s book of the same name released in 2009. “When I heard there was a new book, I was just waiting and waiting for it to come out,” the director told TimeOut in 2015. “I’d wanted to adapt Vineland, but I never had the courage.”

The full trailer for One Battle After Another will arrive next week.
