Pharrell Williams revealed his breakout collection for Louis Vuitton’s Spring/Summer 2024 runway show on Tuesday. His official debut as the fashion house’s new menswear creative director brought a flock of celebrities including Beyoncé, Jay-Z, Zendaya, Megan Thee Stallion, Rihanna, A$AP Rocky, Kim Kardashian, Jared Leto, LeBron James, Naomi Campbell, Lenny Kravitz, and Tyler, the Creator to the Pont Neuf bridge in Paris.
The collection reimagined the iconic Damier motif, which dates back to 1889, and featured the checkerboard design on everything from the runway to a taxicab-yellow leather suit. Williams also combined the classic “LV” monogram and the word “lovers,” with the show notes reading, “LVERS is a state of mind: warmth, wellbeing, and welcome-ness.”
During the event, Williams showcased his recent collaboration with gospel choir Voices Of Fire, “JOY (Unspeakable),” and “Peace Be Still” featuring Chinese pianist Lang Lang.
He also appeared to play a new Clipse song as Pusha T and No Malice walked the runway.
After Williams took his bow, he and Jay-Z hopped on the stage to perform “Frontin’” — Williams’s 2003 debut single featuring the The Blueprint rapper.
In February, Louis Vuitton announced that Williams would be taking on the role of creative director following the death of Virgil Abloh, who served as the artistic director of Louis Vuitton’s menswear collection from 2018 until his death in 2021.
“Pharrell Williamsis a visionary whose creative universes expand from music to art, and to fashion – establishing himself as a cultural global icon over the past twenty years,” Vuitton wrote in a statement at the time.
“There are so many other stars in your constellation. Once you realize that the constellation isn’t even your doing, you’re lucky to exist and shine in that moment where the universe has put these things around you to make a sign,” Williams told Vogue on Tuesday ahead of his debut collection. “That is how I felt with this appointment. I woke up and got that call, so I’m honored.” He continued, “I’m continuing to give reverence to the universe for sending this my way.
His performance garnered praise across industries as celebrities took to social media to celebrate Williams’ debut.
“i love u so much,” Tyler captioned on his Instagram stories alongside a video of Williams walking the runway. “Bro i shed real tears. i couldnt even take photos.”
