Prince Returns to the Theatre for One Night With Dolby Cinemas Enhanced 'Purple Rain' Screenings

Prince‘s Purple Rain will return to the big screen for one night only just one year after its 40th anniversary. On March 5, an enhanced version of the film will be screened in Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos immersive audio at select Dolby Cinema locations.

Purple Rain will be made available at AMC Theatre locations equipped with Dolby Cinema throughout the U.S. and Odeon locations in the U.K. Tickets are available now.

“Purple Rain reimagined in Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos for Dolby Cinema is a celebration of Prince’s genius and enduring legacy,” Jed Harmsen, Head of Cinema and Group Entertainment at Dolby, shared in a statement. “Devoted and new fans alike prepare to be exhilarated by an unforgettable and unparalleled performance from one of music’s greatest of all time.”

According to a release, Purple Rain was restored digitally from an 8K scan of the original 35mm camera negative and received color grading specifically for Dolby Vision. On the audio front, the film’s original Dolby Stereo tracks from over 40 years ago were restored alongside the 20th-anniversary version’s 5.1 multi-channel mix master to create the remastered Dolby Atmos audio presentation.

The 1984 film notably received a limited theatrical release in 2016 following the death of Prince at the age of 57. Since then, the music icon’s estate has engaged in conversations with producer Orin Wolf to create a musical adaptation for the stage. “We have to live up to the largeness of what he put down and make it feel just as alive and vibrant as it did then,” director Lileana Blain-Cruz told Rolling Stone last year. “It’s an exciting challenge. But is it a little terrifying? It is for me. You feel responsibility to make it feel just as thrilling as it did when it first came out.”
