The Rocky Horror Picture Show was based on a stage play by Richard O’Brien, who also wrote the film and appeared in it as Riff Raff. When it was first released, it was critically panned and a commercial flop. But it gained popularity at midnight screenings, where fans would dress up as characters and mimic (and sometimes mock) the action on screen.
The regular screenings of the film in various cities, from New York to Los Angeles to Paris, have given The Rocky Horror Picture Show the distinction of technically being the longest-running theatrical release in film history.
In an interview with Billboard, producer Richard Hartley discussed the film’s enduring popularity and its rowdy midnight screenings, saying, “I sat with Richard [O’Brien] and that’s when we heard them: people talking, shouting. I said to him, ‘This is funnier than the film.’ We thought it was something special. I’d never seen anything like that before. Now, people go see it hundreds of times.”
