As Hollywood continues its incessant blood-sucking reliance on draining old intellectual property in lieu of supporting fresh ideas and stories, Sharon Stone is taking a righteous stand against the recently announced Basic Instinct reboot.
“I mean, go ahead, but good fucking luck,” Stone said with a laugh on Today when asked about the project, which Amazon MGM Studios announced earlier this summer.
The studio has put some serious backing behind the Basic Instinct reboot, enlisting original screenwriter Joe Eszterhas to pen the script for $2 million (against a possible $4 million if the film is made, per The Hollywood Reporter).
Like many reboots, there are, technically, good reasons to dip back into the Basic Instinct well: The original — directed by Paul Verhoeven and starring Stone and Michael Douglas — was a massive hit upon release and remains a milestone in the erotic thriller genre. But as Stone noted on Today, the last effort to revive the series in 2006 with Basic Instinct 2 did not go well. The film (in which Stone reprised her iconic role as Catherine Tramell) was a commercial and critical flop.
“If [the reboot] goes the way the one that I was in went, I would just say, ‘I don’t know why you’d do it,’” Stone said with a chuckle.
Asked about her willingness to speak with such candor, Stone said, “I’m at that stage of my life where I already retired once, and I already died a couple of times. I’m like, what are you gonna do? Kill me again? Go ahead.”
There’s no timeline yet for the Basic Instinct reboot, nor is it fully clear what the film will be about. After the project was announced in July, a source told The Wrap that the film will be “anti-woke,” with Eszterhas sharing a statement of his own: “To those who question what an 80-year-old man is doing writing a sexy, erotic thriller: the rumors of my cinematic impotence are exaggerated and ageist. I call my writing partner the TWISTED LITTLE MAN, and he lives somewhere deep inside me. He was born 29 and he will die 29 and he tells me he is ‘sky high up’ to write this piece and provide viewers with a wild and orgasmic ride. That makes me very happy.”
As for Stone, she currently has a supporting role in Nobody 2, Bob Odenkirk’s action franchise. The actress is also set to appear in Season Three of Euphoria, which will arrive in 2026.
