Saturday Night Live‘s Weekend Update took on Sean “Diddy” Combs’ 50-month sentencing, potential Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations at the Super Bowl, and the ongoing government shutdown, as well as other topics in the news since the late night show was last on the air in May.
“This week, thegovernment finally representedthe people when it justcompletely shut down,” co-anchor Colin Jost joked on the fourth day of the federal government ceasing non-essential operations.
“Honestly, didn’t it feel like thegovernment needed a break?Just so we could all catch ourbreaths,” Jost added. “Can you believe we’re only ninemonths into this presidency? That means we only have threemonths and seven yearsremaining.I already tried fighting. I’mtired.I went to so manyprotests this summer, but it wasfinally worth it because wefinally got them to change theCracker Barrel logo back to myactual grandpa.”
Michael Che then addressed Trump adviser Corey Lewandowski and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem both warning that ICE agents will be the Super Bowl after Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny—SNL‘s host—was announced as the halftime show performer.
ICE being at the Santa Clarita venue would be totally worth it, Che joked—”You know, to catch all thosefarm workers who can affordSuper Bowl tickets.”
Later, Che commented on Combs’ sentencing for two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution. The disgraced music mogul was acquitted in July of the three most serious charges, including racketeering.
“Sean Combs was sentencedon Friday to four years inprison.I’ll be honest,it’s hard to watch someone Ilove get punished, but that’swhat Diddy would do,” Che joked.
“During Sean Combs’ sentencing,he pleaded for mercy, sayingthat thethings he did were disgusting, shameful and sick,” Che added. “In fact, justthinking about them makes himharder than grandma’s candy.”
