Last week, Steve Madden filed a complaint in a federal court in Brooklyn following potential threats from Adidas to sue over his Viento and Janos shoes. Adidas claims that Madden’s new sneakers infringe on their “Three-Stripe” trademark, which protects the brand’s three-parallel stripe designs. Madden argues that Adidas can’t “monopolize common design features” in the fashion industry.

If this sounds exhausting, you’re not alone. Madden himself said in the lawsuit that he’s “tired of being targeted” by Adidas.
And this isn’t the first time the two brands have clashed. Their feud dates back to 2002 when Adidas sued Madden over sneakers featuring two and four parallel stripes. Though both parties settled the case in 2003, the fight over the stripes is far from over — it’s apparently only just beginning.
