Marlon, Shawn, and Keenen Ivory Wayans are shaking the cobwebs off the Scary Movie franchise. On Tuesday, the brothers formally announced their return to the comedy horror series for a six installment. News of the comedy horror revival first made headlines in April during Paramount’s CinemaCon.
Marlon Wayans shared his excitement for the age-old franchise in an Instagram post Tuesday, posed next to a grinning grim reaper.
“We’re back!” he wrote on Instagram. “After nearly 20 years, the Wayans brothers are finally going to give the fans what they’ve been asking for… a return to the Scary Movie franchise! We’re looking forward to having fun on the big screen again.”
The Wayans brothers will write and produce the latest installment, alongside Rick Alvarez. Alvarez has previously collaborated with the Wayans on films like White Chicks and Scary Movie 2. Alvarez also worked with Marlon Wayans in A Haunted House and the sequel A Haunted House 2.
Scary Movie will go into production this year, Deadline reported in April, and will release next year.
Keenan Ivory Wayans directed the first two Scary Movie films, with brothers Marlon and Shawn Wayans co-writing and starring in the horror flick. Scary Movie grossed more than $42 million in its opening weekend, marking the biggest opening weekend for an R-rated horror movie and a Black director at the time. The most recent sequel, Scary Movie 5, arrived in 2013.
Marlon Wayans previously released his Amazon Prime comedy special Marlon Wayans: Good Grief in June, and on the horizon will star in Justin Tipping’s horror filmHim in Sept. 2025.
