The ill-fated journey of the Titan submersible — and the disastrous missteps of OceanGate’s billionaire CEO — is the focus of an upcoming Netflix documentary.
The disappearance of the Titan submersible on its way to the Titanic’s undersea ruins grabbed headlines for weeks in June 2023, but the story behind the submersible is just as shocking, as evidenced by the new trailer for Titan: The OceanGate Disaster:
The documentary, out June 11 on the streaming service, “delves into the psyche of billionaire OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush and explores his relentless quest to bring oceanic exploration to the masses — at any cost,” Netflix said in its synopsis.
“Through exclusive access to whistleblower testimony, pivotal audio recordings, and footage from the company’s early days, the film provides an unprecedented look at the technical challenges, moral dilemmas, and shockingly poor decisions that culminated in the catastrophic expedition. Titan examines the doomed underwater endeavor that forced the world to reconsider the price of unchecked ambition in the depths of the ocean.”
Five people, including Rush, were killed when the Titan submersible imploded just 200 meters off the bow of the wreckage of theTitanic. Before the investigation pointed toward implosion, the submersible went missing, and amassive search began.
In the four days after the Titan dipped below the waves, planes, ships, and underwater rovers from the U.S., U.K., Canada, and France have contributed resources. Searchers raced against time to quickly gather equipment powerful enough to reach the depths of the ocean, since the craft reportedly had just 96 hours’ worth of oxygen available when it began its trip. However, the implosion was ultimately heard by a top-secret U.S. Navy acoustic detection system.
